Getting to the Point of Allergy Relief
Posted by catie on Jun 3, 2010
Recently, NBC 17 in Raleigh did a piece on acupuncture and allergies, and interviewed me for the segment. There has been lots of talk about allergies this year as North Carolina has had one of the worst pollen seasons on record. I spoke to NBC’s Maggie Alexander last week to discuss the options and benefits of acupuncture treatment for seasonal allergies. Check it out and remember: it’s not too late to get relief from this season’s allergies and never to early to get a jump on the Fall!
Cure-all: Ginger Tea
Posted by catie on Nov 14, 2009
If you’ve spoken to me in the last month or so, you have probably already heard how all about ginger tea I am. Give up the coffee and diet cokes – ginger tea is all you need! I’m not talking tea bags – I’m talking fresh sliced ginger in steaming hot water with a little honey. It’s amazing. It’s tasty. It will keep you from getting sick!
Ginger has been used in Chinese Medicine to treat a wide variety of illness including asthma, diarrhea, colds and flu, stomachache, nausea & vomiting. It is beneficial to your immunity and digestive function and is very warming for those cool days.
Cost note: ginger is much cheaper at the regular supermarket than at Whole Foods – and feel free to reuse your slices throughout the day – they just get tastier with every cup!
Preparation: Boil water, and pour into a mug over 4 or 5 slices of fresh ginger. Add honey to taste, sip and enjoy!
Wellness note: If you feel like you have a cold coming on: stiff neck and achy muscles, headache, congestion and NO sore throat – prepare a large mug of hot water with a little bit more ginger than usual – draw a hot bath and sip and soak until you begin to sweat. When you get out of the bath, dry off and put on your favorite pajamas, wrap yourself in blankets to stay warm and sweat out that cold – you’ll wake up feeling so much better!
Sweet & Savory Acorn Squash
Posted by catie on Nov 14, 2009
In season, easy to prepare and oh-so-delicious!
I must credit my dear friend Mike Smith with this recipe
Pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees.
Slice the acorn squash vertically (from the stem down), spoon out the seeds and lay the halves flesh side up in a small baking dish.
Place a spoonful of butter or butter substitute – depending on your omnivorous preference, a couple of spoonfuls of maple syrup, a dash of salt, cayenne pepper and cumin (to taste) into the bowl of each half of squash.
Place in the oven for about 20 minutes, remove and spoon the syrupy, buttery mixture along the edge of the squash to keep them moist and put back into the oven for another 20 minutes or until the flesh is soft when pierced with a fork.
The squash will be spooned out easily and serves as it’s own dish for the topping! Enjoy!
What you need: acorn squash, butter (or substitute), cumin, cayenne, maple syrup.
Time required: 5 minutes prep. 40 minutes cook time.
How tasty? REALLY TASTY!
